Farm Description:

We are a small market farm located just Northeast of the Bridger Mountain Range in the Shields Valley near Wilsall, Montana. We are in an open, quiet rural setting among large cattle ranches 40 minutes from city life, but only ten minutes from our little ranch town.

We are using a combination of organic farming and permaculture practices to bring fertility to an overgrazed and very marginal piece of ground, including composting, green manuring, rotational livestock grazing, water-capturing earthworks, perennial polycultures, and diversified crop production.

We serve a small CSA, and attend a large farmers' market in Bozeman, sell to restaurants and via an online farmers' market. We grow a wide range of veggies, herbs and edible nursery stock, as well as produce pastured eggs using mobile enclosures. We are experimenting with low-tech season extension to produce crops of one sort or another all year long. Projects we hope to complete are construction of a mobile hen house, raised beds, and plantings of hardy fruits, along with continuing development of our farm system. Pigs were recently added to the farm menagerie, and soon dairy cows will follow.

Visits should be for at least one week, and up to one month in duration. We welcome inquiries from people seeking a full season working and learning experience as well. We require 6 hours of labor in the gardens Tuesday through Saturdays, for 30 hours per week.

Meals are self-serve generally, but we also lunch communally on the farm, with everyone pitching in for cooking and clean-up. Join us on the farm from now through October. WWOOFers stay in a separate house a quarter mile up the road from our farm. This house has three bedrooms and two bathrooms, and is furnished. The kitchen is stocked with staple foods, and volunteers may harvest farm vegetables and eggs. Wireless internet service is available on the farm.

Farm volunteers are required to possess a cheerful attitude, a willingness to perform tasks well, and to work diligently for the full 30 hour requirement per week, with no exceptions. Please be prepared for strenuous physical labor and work in all types of weather conditions. Work on our farm can include planting seeds and plants, harvesting, weeding, planting trees and shrubs, livestock care, marketing and more.

We can accommodate up to four people at a time. We can provide transportation to and from Livingston and Bozeman. We speak english only...and can't accommodate pets but may accommodate kids, just ask. We are omnivores, though could accommodate vegetarians.

We are nearby beautiful hiking trails, mountain lakes, tons of camping, world class trout fishing, hot springs, colorful fun towns, a good supply of good live music, and within about 1.5 hours of Yellowstone National Park.

If you would like to learn more about our farm and the work we do, please email us and we will send you a more detailed description of our operations, living arrangements, tips on what to bring, what to expect, etc.

Thank you!
