Farm Description:

We are an organic research mini-farm located in rural Hancock County southwestern Mississippi on 1200+ acres of rolling green pastures and forests. We are part of an intentional spiritual vegetarian farm community called New Talavan and are in the beginning stages of starting a permaculture ecovillage/ farm educational center. We are growing a large year-round organic vegetable garden, large diverse fruit and nut orchard and raise cows for dairy. Our farm goals are community self-sufficiency, researching new crops and heirloom varieties, educational outreach programs, and doing some market selling. We grow many diverse crops including sugar cane, Indian vegetables, exotic fruits, pecans, and many varieties of vegetables and fruits. This Summer we are needing extra help with the large vegetable and fruit tree operation and on our eco-village site.
General work for volunteers includes organic vegetable growing/ planting/ tending/weeding, greenhouse duties, orchard maintenance and pruning, harvesting, seed saving, composting, market sales, various chores and mostly light-moderate general homesteading type work. Volunteers will have the opportunity to learn advanced organic gardening, organic orchard care, seed saving and breeding, greenhouse operations, seed starting, pest management, composting, and marketing. We offer camping and sometimes indoor dormitory-style accomodations; hot showers, internet, and three awesome vegetarian meals a day. Volunteers will also have possible opportunities to learn eco-village development, communication skills, compost toilet systems, natural building, and Ancient Vedic Yoga philosophy. Our community practices Bhakti Yoga and Krishna Consciousness and has these four strict requirements: no drugs/alcohol/marijuana/intoxication, no sex outside marriage, no gambling, no meat/fish/eggs consumed. This is not the stretching type yoga you are familiar with. Bhakti yoga is the yoga of eternal devotion and nvolves much music, dancing, and feasting! Volunteers are expected to be clean, on time, respectful and good listeners. Personal integrity and follow-through are required. 5-6 hours a day mostly light/moderate work, 6 days a week. We work fairly hard and find great satisfaction and meaning in what we do. You will have plenty of time to relax, read, go for walks and explore. This is a very unique opportunity for people who wish to learn organic farming and work pretty hard but also have much quiet time to study, read, meditate, and explore Eastern spirituality. Very unique place, espicaly for the South! We offer use of our facilities, including swimming in our nice ponds, hiking, biking, ecstatic kirtans, awesome drumming and music, and occasional trips to New Orleans and other nearby towns. This is a peaceful, mellow, non-commercial place. Transportation is possibly available from nearby areas. Mostly English speaking, also Hindi and Spanish. Children and pets are probably not accepted right now. Vegetarian/vegan only. This place gets HOT and humid from May-Aug. We require that all volunteers stay at least 2 weeks, preferably 1-3 months or longer. Thanks!
